GREENSBORO, N.C. – Longwood University split a collegiate softball doubleheader with NCAA Division UNC-Greensboro Thursday afternoon in North Carolina, defeating the host school 2-1 in the nightcap after falling 1-7 in the opener. The Lancers wrap up their 2004 campaign with a 37-13 overall record, while the Spartans are now 27-23 on the season.
At UNC-Greensboro in the nightcap, freshman pitcher Abbey Welch/LaPlata, Md. (McDonough) (20-5) earned her 20th win of the season hurling a complete-game, three-hitter with 10 strikeouts, while leading the Lancers to the road triumph. Welch also paced the Longwood offense, getting two hits in three appearances at the plate and recording a stolen base. Sophomore Mallory Gordon/Powhatan (Powhatan) aided the effort with a 2-for-4 performance and an RBI, while freshman Courtney “Pepper” Wilson/Mechanicsville (Lee-Davis) went 1-for-3 with a double.
In the first game, the host school jumped out to an early 7-0 lead after four innings, scoring three runs in the first, one in the second and third, along with two more runs in the fourth. The Lancers answered with a run in the sixth inning, but were unable to recover from the early deficit. Welch provided the Lancers’ lone RBI, along with a 1-for-3 performance at the plate, while sophomore Shamana Washington/Rhoadesville (Orange Co.) and senior Heather Williams/Brookneal (Appomattox) each went 1-for-2. Junior Jen Steele/Manassas Park (Manassas Park) (17-8) took the loss on the mound after scattering eights hits with two strikeouts.
