ASHLAND, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a disappointing 11-10 collegiate baseball decision at Randolph-Macon College Thursday during its season finale in Ashland. The host Yellow Jackets scored the game-winning run in the ninth inning on a Lancer fielding error, snapping a 15-game losing streak in the process. Longwood completes its 2004 season with a final record of 31-16 overall. Randolph-Macon improved to 8-27 with its first win over the Lancers since 1999 (8-6).
The two teams battled closely throughout the game, tied at 5-5 through three innings and again at 9-9 through six innings. Each team added a run in the eighth inning to knot the scoreboard at 10-10 before the hosts scored the game-winner in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Longwood had four players with two hits each in senior Louis Shackelford/Newport News (Denbigh) (2-4, 2 RBI), juniors Robert Gillis/Dartmouth, Nova Scotia (Auburn Drive) (2-3, RBI) and Brett Mooney/Virginia Beach (Salem) (2-5, RBI), along with freshman Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (2-5, RBI). Shackelford hit a solo home run in the sixth inning for the Lancers, while freshman Charlie Yarbrough/Richmond (Mills Godwin) (1-3, 2 RBI) added a solo home run in the second inning. Mooney and Ames each hit triples, while Gillis added a double to the 11-hit effort at the plate. Junior Chris Balus/Newport News (Denbigh) (1-1) took the mound loss, pitching the final 1.1 innings of late relief, allowing two hits and the unearned run with one strikeout. Junior Darin Knicely/Elkton (Spotswood) was the most effective of five Longwood pitchers with 2.0 scoreless innings of middle relief, yielding no hits with one strikeout.
