Baseball Defeats Hampden-Sydney 6-2 In Home Finale At Lancer Stadium

Freshman Alan Moore (8-4) Earns Pitching Win Against Tigers

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took a 6-2 collegiate baseball decision past visiting Hampden-Sydney College Wednesday at Lancer Stadium.  The Lancers stopped a seven-game losing streak with the home victory and are now 31-15 overall.  The Tigers dropped to 14-17-1 overall.  Longwood will conclude its 2004 campaign Thursday (April 22) in Ashland at Randolph-Macon College.  H-SC will host Washington & Lee for a doubleheader on Saturday (April 24).

Longwood took an early lead against Hampden-Sydney with two runs in the 1st inning on a two-out seeing-eye RBI single to left field by sophomore Danny McCraw/Pamplin (Randolph-Henry) (1-4, RBI), and another two-out single to left by junior Chris Balus/Newport News (Denbigh) (2-3, RBI).  The Tigers tied the game at 2-2 in the 2nd inning with a two-run home run from senior Morgan Howell (1-3, 2 RBI).

The Lancers took control with three runs in the 4th inning, all unearned, getting two on a passed ball and throwing error.  Senior Louis Shackelford/Newport News (Denbigh) (2-4, RBI) delivered the other run on a two-out single to right field.  Classmate Brian Medley/Halifax (Halifax Co.) (2-4, RBI) produced another run for LU in the 7th inning with an RBI single to left field.  In addition, freshmen Tyler Childress/Montclair (Forest Park) (3-4) and Charlie Yarbrough/Richmond (Mills Godwin) (2-3) collected three hits and two hits, respectively, for the hosts.

Freshman Alan Moore/Richmond (Monacan) (8-4) earned his team-best eighth win of the season on the mound with the first 7.0 innings, scattering five hits and two earned runs with four strikeouts. Senior Evan Weinstein/Toronto, Ontario (W.L. MacKenzie) pitched the final 2.0 scoreless innings, yielding no hits with two strikeouts.

Hampden-Sydney was led by Howell's home run at the plate, while sophomore Joe Knowles (1-2) also added a hit and a run scored.  Junior Ben Agee (0-1) took the mound loss, pitching 2.0 innings of middle relief, allowing four hits with one strikeout for the Tigers.
