FAIRFAX, Va. -- Longwood University defeated NCAA Division I George Mason University 6-1 in women's collegiate tennis Friday in Fairfax.  The Lancers are now 2-2 overall and will be idle for 14 days until hosting Division I Gardner-Webb March 19.
At George Mason, Longwood won two of three contests in doubles for one point, and five of six contests in singles for its convincing win against a Division I program.  In singles, freshman Romana Bucur/Brasov, Romania (Joan Mseota) won at #1 (6-2, 7-5), as did classmate Lexi Torrice/Richmond (Douglas Freeman) at #3 (6-1, 6-3), senior Cecilia Robinson/Lynchburg (Brookville) at #4 (3-6, 7-5, 6-3), along with freshmen Jenn Edwards/Newport News (Hampton Roads Academy) at #5 (6-1, 6-0) and Nancy Hott/Fairfax (W.T. Woodson) at #6 (6-1, 6-2).  In doubles, Bucur and Robinson won at #2 (8-4), as did seniors Laura Whitehurst/Chesapeake (Western Branch) and Amber Miller/Virginia Beach (First Colonial) at #3 (8-3).
