FAIRFAX, Va. -- Longwood University defeated NCAA Division I George Mason University 4-3 in men's collegiate tennis Friday in Fairfax. The Lancers are now 2-2 overall and will be idle for 11 days until hosting Division III Mary Washington March 16 in a contest re-scheduled from Feb. 24.
At George Mason, Longwood won two of three contests in doubles for one point, and three of six contests in singles for its first-ever win against a Division I program. In singles, junior Chris Newman/Chesapeake (Hickory) won at #2 (4-6, 6-4, 7-5), as did sophomores Diego Quiros/Quesada, Costa Rica (Maria Inmaculada) at #4 (6-4, 6-4) and Justin Dorsk/Virginia Beach (Kempsville) at #6 (6-2, 6-3). In doubles, freshman Rashko Patnikov/Bankya, Bulgaria (Smirnenski) and senior Garrett Green/Fredericksburg (Stafford) won at #2 (8-3), as did sophomore Ian Young/Bowie, Md. (Eleanor Roosevelt) and Dorsk at #3 (8-4).
