FARMVILLE, Va. – Juniors Emily Bikowski/Fairfax (Bishop O’Connell), Isa Cohen/Mineral (Fairfax), and Sophie Dress/Ellicott City, Md. (Howard) each recorded hat tricks, scoring three goals apiece, to help Longwood University maintain its perfect record, defeating UC-Davis 15-13, in the “Battle of the Banned” Tuesday afternoon at Lancer Field. The win marks the Lancers ninth-straight and improves their record to 9-0, while the visiting Aggies drop to 6-3 overall. LU will return to action this Saturday, April 3, as it hosts Pfeiffer beginning at 3 p.m. at Lancer Field.
For their efforts, Cohen, along with teammates senior Carlee Ullery/Keswick (Albemarle) and junior Leanne Kibler/Oakton (Oakton) were named to the Battle of the Banned all-star team, while Leslie Kado, Kelly Albin, and Katie McMahon represented UC-Davis on the squad. As previously mentioned, Cohen registered three goals, along with a season-best four assists. Kibler closed out the match with two goals and an assist, while Ullery had one goal and one assist.
Against UC-Davis, Longwood jumped on the board first, as senior Tia Richardson/Ellicott City, Md. (Centennial) secured the opening draw control and sprinted down the field, scoring the first goal of the match within 13 seconds. The Aggies responded with a goal of their own at the 26:05 mark from Stacy Sugarman. The two teams continued to trade goals throughout an evenly matched half that featured seven ties and four lead changes.
UC-Davis held the largest advantage – just a two-goal margin – during the first session, scoring back-to-back goals at 15:34 and 12:59 to take a 6-4 lead. However, Longwood responded with two unanswered goals of its own, as Bikowski found the back of the net with 10:56 remaining off a pass from Ullery and Kibler scored 23 second later, unassisted. Both teams registered two more goals before breaking at the intermission with an even 8-8 match.
The Lancers exploded in the second half, scoring six unanswered goals in the first 21 minutes. Dress sparked the scoring spree, finding the back of the net at the 22:19 mark off a pass from Cohen. Cohen then dished out another assist, this time to Taylor with 18:34 remaining. Dress continued to fuel the effort, scoring her third goal of the match, unassisted, followed by Ullery’s goal, again off a pass from Cohen. Cohen then kept the ball, scoring back-to-back goals at 11:49 and 8:44 to give Longwood its largest advantage of the match.
After remaining scoreless throughout the second period, UC-Davis finally found the back of the net with 7:15 remaining in the match off an unassisted goal from Kado. The Aggies continued to challenge the Lancers’ lead, scoring four more goals in five minutes, including a free position goal at 0:22 from Albin, to trim the deficit to 15-13. However, Longwood defender junior Shawn Slotke/Baltimore, Md. (Roland Park) halted the Aggies late rally, as she came up with a crucial caused turnover with seven seconds remaining in the game to secure the Lancers’ unblemished record.
In addition to Cohen’s season-high seven points on three goals and four assists, Dress finished the game with a season-high four points on three goals and one assist. Other scorers include Bikowski (3g), Kibler (2g, 1a), Taylor (1g, 2a), Ullery (1g, 1a), sophomore Ali Shafer/Fairfax (Fairfax) (1g), Richardson (1g), freshman Cathleen Strain/Alexandria (Mt. Vernon) (1a).
Senior Stacey Schmidt/Berlin, N.J. (Eastern Regional) went the distance in front of the net, registering five saves on 28 shots.
Kado paced UC-Davis with five points on four goals and an assist, while McMahon and Albin each had three points. McMahon finished with two goals and an assist. Albin had one goal and two assists. Keeper Kristen Braasch played the full 60 minutes in front of the net, recording six saves on 25 shots.
