BOX SCORE GAME 2

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University swept a collegiate baseball doubleheader from
visiting Columbia Union College Sunday at Lancer Stadium, winning the first game 16-4 and the second game 20-5.  The Lancers have won 23 of their last 26 games, to improve their overall record to 23-7.  Longwood will play again Monday (March 29), hosting Saint Augustine's (N.C.) for another 1 p.m. doubleheader at Lancer Stadium.

In the opener, Longwood scored runs in every inning during the 16-run, 15-hit effort that was stopped via the 5-inning, 10-run rule. Junior Darin Knicely/Elkton (Spotswood) (3-4, 2 RBI) and freshman Zach Zigrang/Virginia Beach (Kempsville) (3-3, RBI) each had three hits to lead the Lancers.  Collecting two hits each were seniors Brian Medley/Halifax (Halifax Co.) (2-3, 3 RBI) and Louis Shackelford/Newport News (Denbigh) (2-3, 4 RBI), including a three-run triple by Shackelford in the 3rd inning, along with sophomore Mike Brown/Courtland (Southampton) (2-4).  Shackelford (1-0) also earned the complete-game pitching win while making his first collegiate appearance on the mound, scattering five hits and three earned runs with four strikeouts over the 5.0 innings.

In the nightcap, Longwood again scored runs in every inning during the 20-run, 16-hit effort that was also stopped via the 5-inning, 10-run rule.  The second game featured not one, but two, grand slam home runs by the hosts as Medley (2-2, 5 RBI) and freshman Charlie Yarbrough/Richmond (Mills Godwin) (2-3, 6 RBI) each slugged homers with the bases loaded -- Medley's blast (team-best 9th homer) in the 2nd inning and Yarbrough's line drive shot to left field in the 4th inning.  It was also a career-high six-RBI effort for Yarbrough.  Junior Danny McCraw/Pamplin (Randolph-Henry) (3-3) had three hits to lead the Lancers.  Freshman Nathan Martin/Chesterfield (Manchester) (1-0) earned the pitching win while making his first collegiate appearance on the mound, scattering six hits and one earned run with three strikeouts over the first 4.0 innings.
