PETERSBURG, Va. -- Longwood University split a collegiate baseball doubleheader at Virginia State University Thursday in Petersburg, winning the first game 13-8 before dropping the second game 17-14. The Lancers overall record is now 21-7. Longwood will play again this Sunday, March 28, a 1 p.m. doubleheader against visiting Columbia Union (Md.) at Lancer Stadium.
In the opener at VSU, Longwood broke open a close game that was tied 3-3 after four innings with five runs in the 5th inning and five more runs in the 6th (2) and 7th (3) innings. Senior Brian Medley/Halifax (Halifax Co.) (3-5, RBI) led the 13-hit attack with three hits and an RBI. Junior Chris Balus/Newport News (Denbigh) (2-2, 4 RBI) collected a pair of hits and four RBI, while freshman Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (1-4, 2 RBI) added two RBI. Junior Brett Mooney/Virginia Beach (Salem) (1-2, RBI) added a home run for the Lancers. Freshman Brian McCullough/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) (3-0) earned the pitching win with the first 4.0-plus innings, scattering nine hits and three earned runs with three strikeouts.
In the nightcap, Longwood led 5-1 into the bottom of the 4th inning before Virginia State scored seven runs to lead 8-5. The Lancers battled back in front 14-9 in the 6th inning before the Trojans added eight runs in the bottom of the 6th for the come-from-behind victory -- stopping a six-game winning streak. Freshmen Charlie Yarbrough/Richmond (Mills Godwin) (3-4, RBI) and Hunter Williams/Richmond (Varina) (3-4, 4 RBI) led the way with three hits each, including Yarbrough's team-best 13th double this season. Medley (1-5, RBI) and freshman Tyler Childress/Montclair (Forest Park) (1-2, 2 RBI) each hit home runs for the Lancers -- Medley's team-best 8th homer, and Childress' 2nd. Junior Robert Gillis/Dartmouth, Nova Scotia (Auburn Drive) (0-1) took the pitching loss in relief, allowing two hits and two earned runs over the final inning on the mound.
