BOX SCORE GAME 2
FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University swept a collegiate baseball doubleheader from visiting Southern Virginia University Wednesday at Lancer Stadium, winning the first game 5-4 and the second game 17-2. The Lancers have won five-straight, and 20 of their last 22 games, to improve their overall record to 20-6. It marks the 24th consecutive 20-win season for the program. Longwood will play again Thursday (March 25), a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Virginia State.
In the opener, Longwood led early at 3-0 after two innings before the Knights tied the game at 3-3 in the 4th inning. The Lancers scored two runs in the 6th inning, getting what proved to be the game-winning run on a two-out RBI single from freshman Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (2-4, 2 RBI). Ames' two hits and two RBI led the 10-hit attack. Three others also had two hits in the closely-played game, including sophomore Danny McCraw/Pamplin (Randolph-Henry) (2-3, RBI) along with freshmen Charlie Yarbrough/Richmond (Mills Godwin) (2-2, RBI) and Tyler Childress/Montclair (Forest Park) (2-3, RBI). Yarbrough hit his team-leading 12th double in the 1st inning to drive in a run. Freshman Alan Moore/Richmond (Monacan) (5-2) earned the complete-game pitching win, scattering 10 hits and four earned runs with six strikeouts over the 7.0 innings, his team-best third compete-game this spring.
In the nightcap, Longwood scored runs in every inning with the help of 15 hits, eight walks, and three SVU errors en route to the convincing victory to extend the team's current winning streak to five games. Seniors Brian Medley/Halifax (Halifax Co.) (4-4, RBI) and Louis Shackelford/Newport News (Denbigh) (3-4, RBI) led the way with four hits, and three hits, respectively. Shackelford had an RBI double in the 1st inning. The Lancers also received two hits each from junior Brett Mooney/Virginia Beach (Salem) (2-3, 2 RBI) and freshman Zach Zigrang/Virginia Beach (Kempsville) (2-2, 5 RBI), including a career-high five RBI from Zigrang. Sophomore Mike Brown/Courtland (Southampton) (2-1) earned another complete-game pitching win, scattering seven hits and two earned runs with one strikeout over the 5.0 innings.
