SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Longwood University saw its five-game win streak snap after dropping a heartbreaking 3-2 decision to Presbyterian Saturday during the Spartanburg Softball Tournament in South Carolina. With the loss, the Lancers fall to 19-10 overall and now await the rankings for single-elimination play to determine when they return to action.
Against Presbyterian (24-5), the Blue Hose jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after Jessica Peterka hit a two-run homer in the first inning. Longwood responded with a run of its own in the top of the second, followed by another Presbyterian run in the bottom of the third. The Lancers made a late seventh inning effort to take the lead, but their lone run in the frame would not be enough to capture the win. Freshman Courtney “Pepper” Wilson/Mechanicsville (Lee-Davis) led Longwood with two hits in three appearances at the plate, including an RBI, while Welch went 1-for-3.
Steele (9-6) took the loss on the mound, pitching four innings with three strikeouts. Welch also saw time on the mound, throwing two innings in relief with two strikeouts.
