SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Longwood University put together a seventh-inning, two-out rally to shutout Belmont Abbey 6-0, Friday, March 19, during the Spartanburg Softball Tournament in South Carolina. With the win, the Lancers improve to 17-9 on the season and were scheduled to face Mars Hill later this afternoon.
Against Belmont Abbey (13-14), the two teams remained scoreless through six complete innings until Longwood's late rally, sparked by junior Jen Steele's/Manassas Park (Manassas Park) two-run homer – her fourth of the season -- allowed the Lancers to cross the plate six times to claim the win. Steele closed out the outing with a 2-for-3 performance, including three RBI, while classmate Alishia Stewart/Faber (Nelson Co.) and sophomore Shamana Washington/Rhoadesville (Orange Co.) each went 2-4. Senior Heather Williams/Brookneal (Appomattox) also finished the game with two hits in four at-bats, including a double. Freshman pitcher Abbey Welch/LaPlata, Md. (McDonough) (10-4) earned the win, throwing her 11th complete-game of the season (7.0 IP) with 10 strikeouts.
