FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took a 9-2 collegiate baseball victory past visiting St. Thomas Aquinas (N.Y.) College Thursday at Lancer Stadium. The visiting Spartans declined to play the second game of a scheduled doubleheader. The Lancers have now won 15 of their last 16 games overall to improve their record to 15-5. Longwood will travel to North Carolina this weekend to play two doubleheaders at St. Andrews College on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
Longwood scored two runs in the 1st inning against St. Thomas Aquinas (1-13), and broke the game open with six runs in the 3rd inning en route to the convincing triumph. Senior Brian Medley/Halifax (Halifax Co.) (2-3, 2 RBI) and freshman Charlie Yarbrough/Richmond (Mills Godwin) (2-3, RBI) each collected two hits to lead the Lancer effort, including Yarbrough’s team-best 10th double this season. Sophomore Danny McCraw/Pamplin (Randolph-Henry) (1-4, RBI) added a lead-off solo home run to left field in the 5th inning. Freshmen Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (1-2) scored two runs for the hosts, as did McCraw.
Junior Darin Knicely/Elkton (Spotswood) (2-0) earned the pitching win with 3.0 innings of middle relief, yielding no hits and one unearned run with five strikeouts. Freshman Brian McCullough/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) started and pitched the first 2.0 scoreless innings, allowing one hit with four strikeouts.
