BELMONT, N.C. -- Longwood University took a 14-10 collegiate baseball decision at Belmont Abbey College Sunday in North Carolina, finishing the three-game road series with two of three wins. The Lancers now have a record of 14-5, and have won 14 of their last 15 games overall. Longwood will play on the road again Tuesday, March 16, at Elizabeth City State University in North Carolina -- a scheduled 1 p.m. doubleheader.
In the series finale at Belmont Abbey, Longwood rallied from a 7-5 deficit through five innings with four runs in the 6th inning before adding five more runs in the 8th (2) and 9th (3) innings. The Lancers pounded 16 hits against the Crusaders, including multiple-hit games from six different players. Sophomore Danny McCraw/Pamplin (Randolph-Henry) (3-6, 3 RBI) and freshman Charlie Yarbrough/Richmond (Mills Godwin) (3-6, 2 RBI) each collected three hits to lead the effort, including three doubles by Yarbrough. Garnering two hits each were seniors Louis Shackelford/Newport News (Denbigh) (2-4, RBI) and Brian Medley/Halifax (Halifax Co.) (2-6, 2 RBI), along with freshmen Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (2-5) and Hunter Williams/Richmond (Varina) (2-3). Shackelford hit a solo home run in the 5th inning, while Medley hit his team-leading sixth homer, a two-run shot, in the 8th inning.
Freshman Zach Zigrang/Virginia Beach (Kempsville) (5-0) picked-up the pitching win in relief, his team-leading fifth win this season – all in relief.
