BELMONT, N.C. -- Longwood University split a collegiate baseball doubleheader at Belmont Abbey College Saturday in North Carolina, winning the first game 3-2 before falling in the second game 10-2. The Lancers had their 13-game winning streak stopped with the loss in the nightcap and now have a record of 13-5. Longwood and the Crusaders will complete the three-game weekend series on Sunday in North Carolina.
In the opener, Longwood scored a run in the 3rd inning to tie the game at 1-1, then added two runs in the 6th inning for the one-run decision. Junior Chris Balus/Newport News (Denbigh) produced the game-winning RBI with a sacrifice fly in the 6th. Senior Brian Medley/Halifax (Halifax Co.) (2-4) collected two of the seven hits for the Lancers. Freshman Alan Moore/Richmond (Monacan) (4-1) earned his fourth-straight pitching win with a complete-game effort on the mound, scattering four hits.
In the nightcap, Belmont Abbey scored four runs in the 2nd inning and led 5-0 into the 4th inning en route to the win while halting the Lancer win-streak at 13 in-a-row. Medley (2-4), sophomore Danny McCraw/Pamplin (Randolph-Henry) (2-3, 2 RBI), and freshman Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (2-4) each had two hits with McCraw also providing the only two RBI for Longwood. Sophomore Mike Brown/Courtland (Southampton) (1-1) took the pitching loss with the first 4.0 innings on the mound, allowing seven runs.
