FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University swept a collegiate baseball doubleheader from visiting Shaw (N.C.) Thursday at Lancer Stadium, winning the first game 13-4 and the second game 23-1. The Lancers have now won 12-straight games to improve their record to 12-4 overall. Longwood will play again this weekend, March 13-14, at Belmont Abbey College in North Carolina for a three-game series.
In the opener, Longwood led 5-4 through five innings before erupting for eight runs in the 6th inning of the triumph. Seniors Louis Shackelford/Newport News (Denbigh) (2-4, 2 RBI) and Brian Medley/Halifax (Halifax Co.) (2-3, 3 RBI) hit a two-run single, and a two-run double, respectively, in the decisive inning. In addition to Shackelford’s and Medley’s two hits each, the Lancers also received two hits each from junior Chris Balus/Newport News (Denbigh) (2-3, 2 RBI) along with freshmen Charlie Yarbrough/Richmond (Mills Godwin) (2-4, 2 RBI) and Tyler Childress/ Montclair (Forest Park) (2-4, RBI). Balus’ hits included a two-run home run in the 3rd inning. Freshman Brian McCullough/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) (1-0) earned his first collegiate pitching win with the first 5.0 innings, allowing nine hits and four earned runs with a career-high six strikeouts.
In the nightcap, Longwood pounded 22 hits, including three home runs, en route to the convincing victory to extend the team’s current winning streak to 12 games. Junior Brett Mooney/Virginia Beach (Salem) (5-5, 6 RBI) was perfect at the plate with five hits and six RBI, including a triple and a sacrifice fly. Freshman Zach Zigrang/Virginia Beach (Kempsville) (3-3, 2 RBI) was also perfect at-bat with three hits, including a solo home run in the 4th inning. Those collecting two hits each were Medley (2-5, 3 RBI), Shackelford (2-5, 3 RBI), Balus (2-2), junior Robert Gillis/Dartmouth, Nova Scotia (Auburn Drive) (2-4, 2 RBI), along with freshman Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (2-2, RBI). Shackelford added a three-run home run in the 2nd inning, while sophomore Danny McCraw/Pamplin (Randolph-Henry) (1-3, 3 RBI) also hit a three-run homer in the 5th inning. Senior Evan Weinstein/Toronto, Ontario (W.L. MacKenzie) (2-1) picked-up the pitching win with the first 6.0 innings on the mound, scattering six hits and one earned run with a career-high nine strikeouts.
