Women's Lacrosse Defeats Bloomsburg 16-9

Freshman Jenn Shipp Scored A Career-High Four Goals Against The Huskies

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Longwood University picked up its fifth-straight women’s collegiate lacrosse decision Wednesday afternoon, defeating Bloomsburg 16-9 in Hilton Head, South Carolina.  With the win, the Lancers remain unbeaten (5-0), while the Huskies, who opened their 2004 campaign today, are now 0-1.  The match marks Longwood’s final spring break contest, as the Lancers return home to host NCAA Division I opponent Virginia Tech, Tuesday, March 16 at Lancer Field.  The match-up with the Hokies will be the Lancers third of six total matches played against a Division I opponent this season.

Against Bloomsburg, Longwood outscored the Huskies in the first half, entering the halftime break with an 8-6 advantage.  The Lancers did more of the same during the second session, limiting Bloomsburg to just three goals, while finding the back of the net eight times.  Longwood also out-shot the Bloomsburg 26-19. 

Freshman Jenn Shipp/Charlottesville (Albemarle) found the back of the net a career-high four times, as she led the Lancers on the afternoon.  Sophomore Ali Shafer/Fairfax (Fairfax) assisted Shipp with the goal production, getting a hat-trick of her own.  Juniors Emily Bikowski/Fairfax (Bishop O’Connell) and Isa Cohen/Mineral (Fairfax) each posted two goals and dished out three and two assists, respectively.  Senior Kristy Taylor/Lorton (Bishop Ireton) scored two goals and classmate Carlee Ullery/Keswick (Albemarle) distributed a team-best four assists, while netting a goal of her own.  Junior Sophie Dress/Ellicott City, Md. (Howard) and freshman Cathleen Strain/Alexandria (Mt. Vernon) scored one goal, while senior Tia Richardson/Ellicott City, Md. (Centennial) had one assist.

In front of the net, senior Stacey Schmidt/Berlin, N.J. (Eastern Regional) recorded 37 minutes played with four saves, while sophomore Emily Wilson/Owings, Md. (Northern) had 23 minutes played with five saves.
