LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Longwood University claimed its first win of the season, defeating Barry (Fla.) 9-1 in collegiate softball action Saturday at the Las Vegas Classic in Nevada. The Lancers are now 1-4 on the season, while Barry, ranked no. 12 in the NFCA national poll, drops to 6-2 overall.
Against Barry, Longwood scored three runs in both the third and the fifth innings en route to the six inning victory (eight-run rule). Sophomore Tori Flint/Charlottesville (Albemarle) paced the Lancers with her 3-4 performance at the plate, including two runs scored and an RBI, classmate Mallory Gordon/Powhatan (Powhatan County) aided the offense by going 2-3 with an RBI and a stolen base. Junior pitcher Jen Steele/Manassas Park (Manassas Park) (1-2) picked up her first win of the season on the mound after hurling a complete-game.
