Softball Defeats Lees-McRae 13-0 In Five Innings

Sophomore Shamana Washington Hit A Three-Run Homer Against Lees-McRae

February 28, 2004

BOX SCORE

FARMVILLE, Va. – Sophomore Shamana Washington/Rhoadesville (Orange Co.) hit a three-run homer over the 220-feet deep centerfield fence to help Longwood shutout Lees-McRae 13-0 in a short five-inning game Saturday afternoon during the 2004 Longwood Spring Softball Classic at Lancer Field.  The 13-runs mark a season-high for the Lancers, who after claiming their sixth-straight win, improve to 8-6 on the season.

Longwood now awaits the tournament rankings, which will be released this evening following the 7:15 game for Sunday’s single elimination play.  The Lancers are the only unbeaten team remaining in the event.

Against Lees-McRae, junior Megan Camden/Bedford (Liberty) got Longwood on the board first, as she crossed the plate off a Bobcat error, while sophomore Mallory Gordon/Powhatan (Powhatan) scored on a Washington fielder’s choice.  Washington followed with a run of her own off a two-out RBI-single from sophomore Tori Flint/Charlottesville (Albemarle) to give the Lancers the 3-0 advantage after one inning of play. Longwood added three runs in the second inning, courtesy of a single to left from freshman Courtney “Pepper” Wilson/Mechanicsville (Lee-Davis) and a double to centerfield from Washington.

The third inning featured more of the same.  Wilson reached base on a walk with the bases loaded to walk in Flint for the first of six Lancer-runs in the frame.  Gordon followed with a two-run single to drive in sophomore Julie Oakes/Stafford (North Stafford) and Camden.  Washington capped-off the scoring spree with her three-run homer, bringing in Wilson and Gordon.

In the fourth inning junior pinch-hitter Alishia Stewart/Faber (Nelson Co.) crossed the plate with the 13th Longwood run of the ballgame.  Stewart, who reached on a base hit, stole second and third, before eventually coming home off a single from Wilson.

In addition to Washington’s 2-for-3 performance, including her second homer of the season, Wilson and Flint also registered two hits in three at-bats.  Wilson contributed two runs and three RBI, while Flint had a run and an RBI of her own.  Gordon finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI.  Junior pitcher Jen Steele/Manassas Park (Manassas Park) (5-4) earned the win, throwing her sixth complete-game of the season (5.0 IP).  Steele limited the visiting Bobcats to just two hits, while tying her season-best seven strikeouts.

Stephanie Weinbarger and Meika Jones provided Lees-McRae with its only two hits of the contest, while Megan Phillips took the loss.  Phillips threw 4.0 innings, allowing 11 earned runs with just two strikeouts.
