FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood University had four players reach double-figure scoring, led by freshman Michael Jefferson/Chesterfield (Meadowbrook) with a game-high 26 points, en route to an 84-63 men’s college basketball victory past visiting Southern Virginia University Saturday afternoon in Lancer Hall. The Lancers (4-19) took control of the game in the second half as Jefferson scored 22 points after the intermission, while stopping a seven-game losing streak. Longwood will host Winston-Salem State University on Thursday, Feb. 19, at 7 p.m. in Lancer Hall.
Longwood led 65-58 with under six minutes remaining before the Lancers outscored Southern Virginia 15-0 over a 3:42 span to lead 80-58 at 1:54. Jefferson and freshman Husein Pistoljevic/Richland, Wash. (Hanford) each scored six points during the run, capped-off by Jefferson’s third dunk of the contest. The Lancers shot 51% (18-35) from the field in the second half, including 5-11 on three-point field goals, getting two three-pointers from Pistoljevic during the run.
A closely-played first half witnessed 10 lead-changes and six ties, including 35-35 at halftime. Southern Virginia took its largest lead of the opening period at 30-22 with 5:24 left in the half. Longwood used a 13-5 run to tie the contest at the intermission. Pistoljevic had a pair of three-pointers during the late first-half run as well. The second half remained close until a 7-0 Lancer run gave the hosts a 59-48 lead with 10:56 remaining on a three-pointer from Jefferson. The Knights, though, rallied back to within seven points before the decisive stretch run by Longwood.
Jefferson finished 10-15 from the field, including 2-4 three-pointers, and 4-5 at the free throw line for his game-high 26 points -- adding 10 rebounds for his third career double-double -- getting three steals as well. Freshman Maurice Sumter/Alexandria (T.C. Williams) added his second career double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out late. Pistoljevic had 12 points on four three-pointers, while senior Ryan Earl/Tustin, Calif. (Tustin) added 10 points. Senior Nathan Fortener/Hartford, Ky. (Ohio Co.) contributed eight points and eight rebounds, while junior Ryan Marable/Chesterfield (Huguenot Academy) dished-out six assists off the bench. Longwood finished 44% (31-71) from the field, including 31% (8-26) on three-pointers, and 74% (14-19) at the line.
Ryan Farnworth posted a double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Knights (10-15), while Ryan Henderson added 13 points, and Bailey Beckstead had 11 points. Southern Virginia shot just 32% (18-57) from the field, including only 21% (4-19) on three-pointers, and 68% (23-34) at the line.
The Longwood victory avenged an 82-63 loss at Southern Virginia back on Jan. 14 in Buena Vista.
