NORFOLK, Va. -- Longwood University lost a 6-0 decision at NCAA Division I No. 6 Old Dominion University Sunday in Norfolk during the Stihl Classic. The Lancers are now 2-5 this season and will play again this Wednesday, Sept. 17, at Division I Winthrop University in South Carolina.
At ODU, the Lancers battled tough for the opening 45 minutes as the hosts could only manage one first-half goal at 22:52 from Attila Vendegh. The powerful Monarchs pulled away in the second half, getting goals from Vendegh (49:05), Kyle Hartley (55:16), a pair from Kevin McMenamin (64:50, 75:46), and Gianni Cimini (84:27) for a final score of 6-0.
Sophomore Bryan Sanford/Springfield/West Springfield started in goal and played the first 51:39, allowing just two goals with two saves as Old Dominion took a 15-3 advantage in shots and an 8-1 edge in corner-kicks. Freshman Justin Brock/Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto finished in front of the net, playing the final 30:21 and allowing four goals with two saves. Monarch keepers Samuel Cameron (1) and John Connelly combined for one save.
Senior Shawn Spilman/Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills and junior Stuart Bertsch (Norfolk/Maury) were each named to the All-Tournament Team.
