Men's Basketball Falls At Division I Radford 84-61

Freshman Michael Jefferson Scores Game-High 22 Points At Radford

RADFORD, Va. -- Longwood University dropped an 84-61 men’s college basketball decision at NCAA Division I Radford University Wednesday night in Radford. The Lancers fell behind 54-26 at halftime and never recovered during the road loss, their seventh-straight defeat to move the record to 3-19. The Highlanders of the Big South Conference improved to 11-11. Longwood will host Southern Virginia University this Saturday, Feb. 14, at 3 p.m. in Lancer Hall.

Longwood started fast at Radford, leading early at 13-12 just 3:07 into the game, getting seven quick points from freshman Maurice Sumter/Alexandria (T.C. Williams). The Highlanders, however, outscored the Lancers 28-1 to lead 40-14 with 6:23 left before the intermission. The hosts took their largest lead of the period at 46-16 (3:26), and led comfortably at halftime (54-26). Chris Goodin led the way in the opening half with 17 first-half points as Radford shot 64% (21-33) from the field, including 6-8 three-point field goals.

Radford extended the advantage to 33 points early in the second half, leading 60-27 with 18:45 remaining. At that point, Longwood decided that enough was enough, and went on an 18-3 run to narrow the margin to 63-45 at 12:38. Sumter scored six points during the run, and freshman Husein Pistoljevic/Richland, Wash. (Hanford) nailed two three-pointers during the quick run. The Lancers continued to play hard and trimmed the deficit to 74-59 with 5:39 left to play on a layup from senior Nathan Fortener/Hartford, Ky. (Ohio Co.). Freshman Michael Jefferson/Chesterfield (Meadowbrook) scored seven points during this stretch of the game. Neither team would score again until just 2:01 remained on jumper by the Highlanders who would go on to outscore Longwood 10-2 the rest of the way and secure the victory.

Jefferson scored a game-high 22 points, adding six rebounds, four assists, and two steals to lead the Lancers. Sumter finished with 14 points and six rebounds, while Pistoljevic added nine points on a trio of three-pointers, and Fortener had eight points and eight rebounds. Junior Ryan Marable/Chesterfield (Huguenot Academy) dished out six assists. Longwood shot 34% (22-65) from the field, including just 26% (7-27) on three-pointers, and 63% (10-16) at the line.

Goodin finished with 18 points to lead the Highlanders, followed by Aaron Gill had 12 points, while Kyle Zaharias and Olumuyiwa Popoola each contributed 11 points. Chris Oliver grabbed a game-high10 rebounds off the bench as the hosts outrebounded the visitors 46-34. Radford shot 54% (30-56) from the field, including 67% (8-12) on three-pointers, and 62% (16-26) at the line.
