FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a 78-56 men’s basketball decision to visiting Hofstra University Monday night in Willett Hall. The Pride improved to 5-0 for the first time since 1982-83, and were led by Aurimas Kieza with a double-double of 19 points and 15 rebounds. The Lancers (0-8) were led by sophomore Michael Jefferson/Chesterfield (Meadowbrook) with 11 points. Longwood will play again Wednesday, Dec. 8, hosting VMI for Armed Forces Appreciation Night at 7 p.m. in Farmville.
Hofstra took control of the game early, using a 7-0 run to take a 14-5 lead at 12:35 before Longwood scored back-to-back baskets to cut the lead to 14-9 at 11:02. The Pride went on another 7-0 run to pull ahead 21-9 on a fast break tip-in from Loren Stokes with 7:15 left in the opening half. Hofstra led by as many as 16 points during the opening half at 35-19 (2:39) en route to a 37-23 lead at the intermission.
The Pride extended their lead to 20 points (48-28) at the 16:27 mark of the second half on a three-pointer from Kieza that started an 8-0 run that moved the lead up to 53-28 with 14:13 remaining. Longwood rallied back to within 64-49 with 8:19 left on a basket from Jefferson to cap a 21-11 run. The visitors, however, scored seven unanswered points to lead 71-49 (5:46), and the Lancers could only close to within 20 points down the stretch.
Jefferson led Longwood with his 11 points, the only Lancer in double-figures, while adding six rebounds. Sophomore Husein Pistoljevic/Richland, Wash. (Hanford) added nine points on 3-5 three-pointers, while classmate Maurice Sumter/Alexandria (T.C. Williams) contributed eight points and a team-high seven rebounds. Sophomore Leland Beale/Poquoson (Oak Ridge, N.C. Military Academy) also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. LU shot 33% (21-63) from the field, including 32% (7-22) on three-pointers, and 50% (7-14) at the line.
Kieza finished with his double-double of 19 points and a career-high 15rebounds for Hofstra, while Stokes also scored 19 points - his 20th-straight game in double-figures. Antoine Agudio added 16 points, including four three-pointers (4-7), and Michael Radziejewski came off the bench to add 10 points for the Pride. HU shot 47% (28-60) from the field, including 38% (8-21) on three-pointers, and 64% (14-22) at the line.
