December 3, 2004

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University women’s golf head coach Lane Pace has announced the signing of Mary Carmody/Cortland, N.Y. (Cortland) to a National Letter of Intent to compete for the institution’s women’s golf team in 2005-06. The Lancers are currently operating under all NCAA Division I rules and regulations in 2004-05, including the scheduling requirements, during the second year of their four-year Division I reclassification period toward official certification in September 2007.

“I am excited about signing Mary to play golf here at Longwood University,” commented Pace. “Not only is Mary a great golfer, she is a superb athlete and an exceptional student. With the graduating seniors, Mary will be in a position to step right in and contribute to the team.”

Carmody, who was the New York State Girl’s Amateur runner-up in 2004, also earned Central New York PGA Junior Tour 2004 Player of the Year accolades. She was the 2003 and 2004 Elm Tree Golf Club’s Women’s Club Champion and a medalist at the 2003 New York Sate Junior Girl’s Amateur Championship.

A three-year member of the boys varsity golf team at Cortland High School, Carmody also was a four-year member of the varsity field hockey squad. Co-captain of the field hockey team, she earned Most Valuable Player honors in 2004 and was named to the All-League 1st-team.

“Mary has a tremendous desire to be the best, which is what attracted me to her,” stated Pace. “It is players like Mary that will keep this program successful both on the course as well as in the classroom during our transition to Division I.

Carmody, who is the daughter of Timothy and Adelaide Carmody of Cortland, N.Y., plans to major in exercise science at Longwood.

The Lancers finished the fall portion of the 2004-05 season placing in the top 10 in all five of the tournaments they participated in, including a first-place finish at the Elon Invitational September 25-26, as well as a second-place finish at the Augusta State Invitational November 8-9.
