Men's Basketball Falls 78-55 To Mount St. Mary's In Columbia Classic Consolation

Freshman Lamar Barrett Scores 17 Points Against Mountaineers

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Longwood University dropped a 78-55 decision to Mount St. Mary's College Saturday in the consolation game of the Columbia Classic in New York City.  The Lancers trailed just 37-30 at halftime before being outscored 41-25 in the second half.  Longwood (0-2) will host Radford University of the Big South Conference in its home opener on Tuesday, November 23, at 7 p.m. in Willett Hall on-campus in Farmville.

Longwood and Mount St. Mary's were tied 2-2 early at 17:42 on layup from freshman Lamar Barrett/Providence, R.I. (St. Andrew's).  The Mount used a 17-5 run to lead 19-7 at 12:44, and extended the margin to 14 points at 25-11, their largest lead of the first half with 9:47 remaining.  The Lancers battled back, though, to within 37-30 at the intermission behind a 19-12 run of their own - capped by a buzzer-beating three-pointer by freshman Brandon Giles/Gaithersburg, Md. (Magruder).

Longwood closed to within 39-33 early in the second half on another tree-pointer, this one from freshman Kevin Schneider/Phoenix, Ariz. (Brophy Prep) at 18:13.  It was as close as the Lancers would get, though, as The Mount quickly responded with six-straight points to lead 45-33 with 15:05 left to play.  The Mountaineers continued to roll and led by as many as 26 points down the stretch (72-46, 3:22) on the fourth three-pointer of the game by Landy Thompson.

Barrett led Longwood for the second consecutive night with 17 points, adding five rebounds and four assists.  Junior Chad Kosmo/Northport, Maine (Maine Central Institute) contributed eight points and eight rebounds, while freshman Dana Smith/Woodbridge (C.D. Hylton) had six points and five rebounds while playing 17 minutes off the bench for the Lancers.  LU shot 36% (24-67) from the field, including just 14% (2-14) on three-pointers, and only 46% (5-11) at the line.

Mount St. Mary's was led by Thompson with game-highs of 34 points and nine rebounds, adding three assists and four steals as the only MSM player in double-figure scoring.  The Mount shot 43% (25-58) from the field, including 35% (6-17) on three-pointers, and 82% (22-27) at the line.

Barrett was named to the All-Tournament Team for his two-game efforts that included 35 points (17.5), nine rebounds (4.5), nine assists (4.5), and three steals (1.5).
