Men's Basketball Falls 82-49 At University of San Francisco

Sophomore Leland Beale Scores Season-High 11 Points Against Dons

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Longwood University dropped an 82-49 men's basketball decision at the University of San Francisco Friday night during the first-round of the Northwestern Mutual Shootout in California.  The host Dons (4-3) led 45-17 at halftime, and got a game-high 15 points from John Cox.  The Lancers (0-10) were led by sophomore Leland Beale/Poquoson (Oak Ridge, N.C. Military Academy) with a season-high 11 points.  Longwood will play UC Davis in the event's consolation game Saturday at 8:30 p.m..

Longwood scored the first four points of the game at USF before the host Dons ran off 15-straight points to lead 15-4 at 15:59.  The Lancers closed to within 15-9 at 12:04 before a 17-3 run made it 32-12 in favor of the hosts at 6:25.  San Francisco continued its momentum to lead 45-17 at the intermission as Cox finished with 13 points in the first half.

The Dons extended their margin to as many as 42 points in the second half at 74-32 with 9:23 remaining.  Longwood managed to trim the deficit to 29 points at 78-49 (3:12) with a 16-4 run sparked by a pair of three-pointers from freshman Brandon Giles/Gaithersburg, Md. (Magruder).  The Lancers played the final 20 minutes nearly even as USF only outscored LU 37-32 in the second half.

Beale led Longwood with 11 points and seven rebounds off the bench, while junior Chad Kosmo/Northport (Maine Central Institute) added nine points and seven rebounds before fouling out.  Sophomore Michael Jefferson/Chesterfield (Meadowbrook) also had nine points, including a pair of second-half three-pointers, while Giles finished with six points and three assists off the bench.  LU shot 28% (17-60) from the field, including 23% (5-22) on three-pointers, and 46% (10-22) at the line.

Cox had 15 points and five rebounds to lead San Francisco, a school with two National Championships to its credit from the 1950's.  Tyrone Riley and Jason Carter each scored 11 points, while Johnny Dukes had 10 points as the Dons placed four players in double-figure scoring.  USF shot 45% (33-73) from the field, including 11% (2-19) on three-pointers, and 58% (14-24) at the line.
