Men's Basketball Falls 90-60 At William and Mary

Freshman Dana Smith Contributes Eight Points At W&M

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a 90-60 men’s basketball decision at The College of William and Mary Wednesday night in Williamsburg.  The host Tribe were led by Edwin Ofori Attah with a game-high 17 points off the bench, while the Lancers were led by freshman Lamar Barrett/Providence, R.I. (St. Andrew’s) with 16 points.  Longwood will play again this Saturday, Dec. 4, at Howard University in Washington, D.C. at 2 p.m..

At W&M, Longwood scored the game’s opening basket, a three-pointer from sophomore Michael Jefferson/Chesterfield (Meadowbrook), less than a minute in at 19:17.  The Lancers still led 9-8 at 17:03 on a jumper by Barrett.  The host Tribe, however, went on a 35-13 run with the help of seven three-pointers to lead 43-22 with 7:04 left in the half.  W&M maintained the advantage and led 56-34 at the intermission.  The hosts shot 61% (20-33) from the field in the first half, including 54% (7-13) on three-pointers.

Longwood began the second half with excellent defensive pressure and did not allow a W&M field goal the first 6:53 of the period as the hosts only managed 5-6 free throws.  The Lancers, meanwhile, outscored the Tribe 23-13 to close to within 69-57 with 8:57 remaining.  LU had an opportunity to cut the lead to 10 points, but couldn’t convert a layup, and W&M followed with a three-pointer at 8:24 by Ofori Attah for a 72-57 lead.  The Lancers would only make 3-5 free throws the rest of the way.  The Tribe finished the contest on a 21-3 run for the final margin of victory.

Barrett led Longwood with his 16 points, including 12 in the first half, adding a team-best seven rebounds and three assists while making 8-10 shots from the field.  Jefferson finished with 12 points and three assists, and sophomore Maurice Sumter/Alexandria (T.C. Williams) added 11 points and six rebounds.  LU shot 36% (24-67) from the field, including 18% (5-28) on three-pointers, and 64% (7-11) at the line.

Ofori Attah led William and Mary with 17 points, including 13 in the first half, adding six rebounds.  Hawley Smith finished with 16 points and seven rebounds, while Nathan Mann had 12 points with a trio of treys and four assists.  W&M shot 50% (30-60) from the field, including 33% (8-24) on three-pointers, and 73% (22-30) at the line.
