FARMVILLE, Va. -- Quinnipiac University scored the game’s first 19 points en route to an 89-62 win past host Longwood University in men’s college basketball Saturday at Willett Hall. The Bobcats (2-2) were led by Craig Benson with a game-high 19 points, while Rob Monroe added 15 points and 14 assists. The Lancers (0-4) were led by freshman Lamar Barrett/Providence (St. Andrew’s) with 18 points. Longwood will play again Monday, Nov. 29, at Hampden-Sydney College at 7 p.m..
Visiting Quinnipiac jumped ahead 19-0 at 13:53 of the first half as Monroe made his first four shots, including two three-pointers, for 10 quick points. Longwood finally scored at 13:36 on a pair of free throws by Barrett. The Bobcats extended the lead to 35-8 at 7:39 before the Lancers scored back-to-back baskets to pull within 35-12 with 2:20 left in the half.
QU, however, closed the period with a 10-5 run to lead 45-17 at the intermission while finishing the opening 20 minutes shooting 56% (19-34) from the field -- making 58% (7-12) on three-pointers. LU shot just 22% (7-32) in the first half, including 1-10 on three-pointers. The Bobcats scored the first four points of the second half to lead 49-17 (19:27) and Longwood, though outscoring QU 45-44, only managed to get within 23 points on three occasions during the final 20 minutes (71-48, 7:24; 78-55, 3:59; 81-58, 3:07).
As mentioned, Longwood was led by Barrett with his 18 points, adding six rebounds, the only player to reach double-figure scoring for the Lancers. Sophomore Maurice Sumter/Alexandria (T.C. Williams) contributed nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds, adding three steals and two blocks, while classmate Leland Beale/Poquoson (Oak Ridge, N.C. Military Academy) had seven points and four rebounds. LU shot 32% (22-68) from the field, including 1-16 on three-pointers, and 61% (17-28) at the line.
As mentioned, Quinnipiac was led by Benson’s 19 points, including four three-pointers, along with Monroe’s double-double of 15 points (three treys) and 14 assists -- 10 in the first half. C.J. Vick contributed 14 points and nine rebounds for the Bobcats. QU finished at 52% (34-65) from the field, including 55% (12-22) on three-pointers, and 64% (9-14) at the line.
