November 17, 2004

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University will open its much-anticipated 2004-05 season this weekend, November 19-20, with its participation in the Columbia Classic hosted by Ivy League member Columbia University in New York City.  The Lancers of second-year head coach Mike Gillian will open against the host Lions Friday, Nov. 19, at 7 p.m., following the tournament opener between Morehead State and Mount St. Mary’s.  The Classic’s respective consolation and championship games will be played Saturday, Nov. 20, at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively.

“The countdown for Longwood Basketball to make its move to Division I play is about over,” said Gillian.  “We are excited, prepared, and can't wait for it all to get started this weekend in the tournament we are playing at Columbia University.  The field of Columbia, Morehead State, and Mount St. Mary's is a good one for us to get on the court with and evaluate the progress we have made thus far in putting together a Division I basketball program.  It's the start of what promises to be quite an adventure for Longwood Basketball and everyone who has worked so hard to bring this process to its fruition.”
