FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took a 3-1 collegiate women’s soccer triumph past visiting Barton College Tuesday night at Lancer Field. The Lancers scored all three goals in the second half while rallying for the come-from-behind victory to improve their record to 2-10 overall. Longwood will play again this Saturday, October 9, at Virginia Commonwealth beginning at 7 p.m. in Richmond.
Longwood controlled the match from the start, though fell behind 1-0 at the intermission on a first-half goal from Barton’s Tara Davis, assisted by Kelly McEleney at 16:22. The Lancers had outshot the Bulldogs 10-2 during the opening 45 minutes. LU finally got on the scoreboard early in the second period at 52:38 when junior April Lockley/California, Md. (Leonardtown) collected a loose ball in close and found the net while tying the match at 1-1. Freshman Stephanie Schroeder/Stephens City (Sherando) tallied her first collegiate goal in high fashion at 70:54 with a perfectly-executed “bicycle kick” that proved to be the game-winner. Classmate Tessa Kofler/Stafford (North Stafford) added an insurance goal at 82:06 when she earned her first collegiate goal after receiving a nice feed from sophomore Tiffany Crane/Virginia Beach (Kellam).
Longwood finished the contest with a 17-3 advantage in shots, and a 7-3 edge on corner-kicks. Sophomore Anna Gravely/Virginia Beach (Frank W. Cox) led Longwood with five shots, while Kofler and Schroeder each had three attempts. Sophomore keeper Heather Storrie/Spring Grove, Pa. (Spring Grove) went the distance in front of the net for the Lancers with one save. Ashley Ross also played the full 90 minutes in goal for Barton.
