Field Hockey Defeats Bellamine 6-1 To Close Out 2004 Campaign

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Longwood University won its season finale in field hockey Saturday afternoon, defeating Bellarmine University 6-1 in North Carolina. The Lancers finished their campaign with a final record of 7-10, including three consecutive wins to close-out the year. Longwood was playing its first season under NCAA Division I rules and regulations, and played 14 Division I opponents this fall.

Longwood took an early 1-0 lead when freshman Mary Freeman/Fredericksburg (Stafford) scored at the 9:42 mark on an assist by junior Marina Sizow/Virginia Beach (Kempsville). Bellarmine (9-9) was able to tie the game a little over ten minutes later when Sarah Roney scored. Junior Sarah Hitchings/Virginia Beach (Kempsville) put the Lancers up for good when she flicked in a pass from senior Lorrie Watts/Fredericksburg (Stafford) with four minutes to play in the first stanza.

Longwood added four insurance goals in the second half, including two by junior Alexis Ramey/Westminster, Calif. (Marina). Ramey tallied a goal at the 50:43 and 56:27 marks. Juniors Julie Price/Stafford (North Stafford) and Echo Naugle/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) closed out the scoring for the Lancers. Sizow finished the game with three assists for Longwood.

Longwood took a 14-6 edge in shots, and had an 11-2 advantage in corner-kick opportunities. Senior goalkeeper Julie Patterson/Esmont (Monticello) and freshman goalkeeper Avanell Schmitz/Newport News (Denbigh) combined for the shutout for the Lancers, each making two saves in the contest. Bellarmine goalkeeper Holli Kremer went the distance and made four saves for the Knights.

It was the final match for both Watts and Patterson, who helped the program to a record of 30-39-0 (.435) during their four-year stint. Watts closed out her career with 22 goals and 26 assists, while Patterson, who started in all 69 matches she played in, made 579 saves and had 12 shutouts.
