BOX SCORE
FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University won its season finale in women’s soccer Friday, defeating Howard University 4-2 at Lancer Field on Senior Day. The Lancers finished the campaign with a final record of 5-13, including two consecutive wins to close-out the year, and four wins over the final seven contests overall. Longwood was playing its first season under NCAA Division I rules and regulations, and played 17 Division I opponents this fall.
Longwood took control of the match against Howard early with two quick goals during the first 2:56 as sophomore Anna Gravely/Virginia Beach (Frank W. Cox) scored on a header at 1:23 off a corner-kick from sophomore Tiffany Crane/Virginia Beach (Kellam). Junior Melissa Cary/Bristow (Brentsville) followed with a penalty-kick goal at 2:56 as the Lancers led 2-0 less than three minutes into the game. The Bison came right back, though, with a goal at 6:00 from Alyssa Fortune, assisted by Michelle Williston. Cary added her second goal at 27:12 on another header off another perfectly-executed corner-kick from Crane to give LU a 3-1 lead at the intermission. The goal proved to be the game-winner, and for Crane, it pushed her assist total to a team-best five this season.
The Lancers added an insurance goal in the second half at 54:49 when freshman Stephanie Schroeder/Stephens City (Sherando) tallied a goal with another header off a cross from classmate Kristina Reed/Spotsylvania (Chancellor). It was Schroeder’s team-best fourth goal this year. Howard put a final score on the board at 75:23 when Raneika Bean knocked the ball over the keeper’s head on a breakaway down the middle of the field.
Longwood took a 12-9 edge in shots, and had an 8-1 advantage in corner-kick opportunities. Sophomore keeper Heather Storrie/Spring Grove, Pa. (Spring Grove) went the distance in front of the net with two saves for the Lancers. Howard keeper Lindsey Walton also went the distance and made three saves for the Bison.
It was the final match for Longwood’s lone senior, Mikaela Bizer/Annandale (Annandale), who helped the program to a record of 42-26-3 (.613%) during her four-year career.
