CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Longwood University dropped a 1-0 overtime men’s soccer decision to nationally-ranked #3 University of Virginia at UVA’s Klockner Stadium Wednesday evening. The host Cavaliers improved to 12-2, while the Lancers are now 1-13. Longwood will play again Tuesday, October 26 at Wofford. Game time is slated for 6:00 p.m.
After both teams played through two scoreless periods in regulation, the Cavaliers’ Matt Oliver scored the game-winning goal 5:20 into the first overtime period to lift Virginia to the victory. Oliver, who scored his fourth goal of the season, scored on a cross sent in by Hunter Freeman at the 95:20 mark.
Virginia, #3 in the NSCAA/adidas national poll, outshot Longwood 28-1 and held the 21-0 edge in corner-kick opportunities. Freshman goalkeeper Matt VanOekel/Chesapeake (Great Bridge) made a game-high eight saves for the Lancers, while his teammates added two goal-saving stops to give the Lancers 10 saves for the match.
