Women's Soccer Falls To Visiting Liberty 2-1 During Oktoberfest

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Visiting Liberty University took a 2-1 collegiate women’s soccer decision past Longwood University Saturday afternoon at Lancer Field. The Flames scored two first-half goals and fought off a second-half Lancer rally to improve to 3-5 overall. Longwood is now 1-10, and will play again Tuesday, October 5, hosting Barton College at Lancer Field in Farmville beginning at 6 p.m.. Liberty will host VCU on Tuesday as well in Lynchburg.

The closely-played match saw the visitors take full advantage of two shots in the first half resulting in two goals. The first was scored by freshman Hannah Sullivan at 16:42, assisted by junior Rachel Bendzlowocz. Liberty added its second goal exactly six minutes later at 22:42 when sophomore Mandee Judd found the back of the net, unassisted. Longwood seemed to control the second half slightly, and did create some excitement with a late goal in the final minute at 89:05 by junior April Lockley/California, Md. (Leonardtown) with an assist from senior Mikaela Bizer/Annandale (Annandale) on a cross.

The two teams each had seven shot attempts, though Longwood took a 4-2 advantage on corner-kicks. Lauren Zealand led Liberty with two shots, while sophomore Anna Gravely/Virginia Beach (Frank W. Cox) led Longwood with two shots. Freshman keeper Anne Whitmore/Charlottesville (Western Albemarle) (31:08, 2 goals) and sophomore keeper Heather Storrie/Spring Grove, Pa. (Spring Grove) (58:52, 1 save) split time in front of the net for the Lancers. Senior keepers Natalie Mayer (45:00) and Sonia Rodriguez (45:00, 1, goal, 1 save) did likewise for the Flames.
