BOX SCORE

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University dropped an 87-74 men’s college basketball decision to visiting Saint Augustine’s (N.C.) College Saturday afternoon in Lancer Hall.  Junior Damien Daniels led the Falcons (8-3) with 26 points.  Freshman Michael Jefferson/Chesterfield (Meadowbrook) led the Lancers with a game- and career-high 28 points.  Longwood is now 2-12 and will play again Wednesday, Jan. 7, hosting Saint Paul’s at 7 p.m. in Lancer Hall.

Longwood played its third-straight game without senior All-American Charles Stephens/Danville (GW-Danville), averaging 23 points and 12 rebounds.  Stephens’ mother, Rachel Calloway, passed away this morning (Sat., Jan. 3) at her home in Danville following a battle with cancer.

Longwood jumped ahead 20-10 during the first 6:09 of the game after basket from Jefferson, and the Lancers led 23-14 with 11:36 left before halftime on a three-pointer from Jefferson.  Saint Augustine’s, however, used a 14-1 run to take a 28-24 lead at 6:58 en route to a 43-39 halftime advantage.  The Lancers closed to within 49-45 early in the second half (17:29), and a follow tip-dunk from Jefferson at 8:22 brought the hosts within 68-61.  Longwood, though, could get no closer than 10 points (76-66, 4:37) down the stretch as the Falcons shot 61% (20-33) from the field in the second half.

Jefferson added eight rebounds, four steals, and three assists to his career-high 28 points for Longwood.  Freshman Leland Beale/Poquoson (Oak Ridge, N.C. Military Academy) came off the bench to add career-highs of 13 points and eight rebounds, while classmate Husein Pistoljevic/Hanford, Wash. (Richland) had 10 points.  Longwood shot 43% (25-58) from the field, including 38% (6-16) on three-point field goals, and 82% (18-22) at the free throw line.

The Falcons also received double-figure scoring from senior Desmond Peoples with 15 points, while sophomore Cedric Williams added 13 points.  Saint Augustine’s shot 55% (37-67) from the field, including 39% (7-18) on three-pointers, and 67% (6-9) at the line.
