Men's Basketball Falls At Southern Virginia 82-63

Freshman Niels Dungal Has Career-Highs Of Nine Points & Nine Rebounds

BUENA VISTA, Va. – Longwood University dropped an 82-63 men’s college basketball decision at Southern Virginia University Wednesday night in Buena Vista. The Lancers are now 3-13, and will play again this Saturday, Jan. 17, at the University of the District of Columbia – tip-off at 2 p.m. in Washington, D.C.. The host Knights improved to 8-12.

At Southern Virginia, Longwood led early as freshman Husein Pistoljevic/Richland, Wash. (Hanford) connected on a trio of three-point field goals for a 13-10 lead at 12:58. The Lancers extended the advantage to 29-19 with 4:37 left in the first half on a jumper from senior Ryan Earl/Tustin, Calif. (Tustin). The Knights finished the half strong to trail just 36-31 at the intermission. Southern Virginia came out in the second half and blitzed Longwood, stunning the visitors with a 28-4 run to take control and lead 59-40 with 11:31 remaining. The Lancers did narrow the margin to 64-53 with 7:23 left on a three-point play from senior Nathan Fortener/Hartford, Ky. (Ohio Co.), but the hosts came right back with seven unanswered points and were never threatened down the stretch.

Pistoljevic led the Lancers with 17 points, including four three-pointers, the only Longwood player to reach double-figure scoring. Freshman Niels Dungal/Reykjavik, Iceland (Trinity Episcopal) came off the bench to add career-highs of nine points and nine rebounds, while Fortener finished with eight points. The Lancers shot just 33% (21-63) from the field, including 31% (5-16) on three-pointers, and 62% (16-26) at the free throw line.

Bailey Beckstead led five Southern Virginia players in double-figures with his game-high 23 points. Ryan Farnworth had 12 points, Brandon Homer had 11 points, while Ryan Henderson and Dave Tarwater each finished with 10 points. The Knights shot 46% (29-63) from the field, including 54% (7-13) on three-pointers, and 74% (17-23) at the line.

It was the first-ever meeting between the two schools in men's basketball. The two teams will meet again next month in Lancer Hall on Feb. 14 in Farmville.
