Women's Basketball Crushes Saint Paul's 93-50

Farmville, Va. - The Longwood University women's basketball team routed visiting Saint Paul's College 93-50 this evening in Lancer Hall.  The 43-point win was the largest margin of victory for the Lancers this season and the highest since last season's 101-56 demolishing of St. Andrews.

Saint Paul's jumped out to an early 5-2 lead as the Lady Tigers scored on two straight baskets.  Longwood then went on an 18-2 run to take a 20-7 lead.  Sophomore forward Jessica Wilkerson (Roanoke, Va./Northside) connected on 4-of-5 three pointers in the first half to give Longwood a 49-24 advantage heading into the break.  Longwood opened the scoring gap even more in the second half, holding Saint Paul's to just 10 made baskets. 

Wilkerson poured in a career-high 21 points, including 5-of-8 from beyond the arc and added four assists, two rebounds and a steal.  Junior All-American candidate Marita Meldere (Rujiena, Va./Lynchburg Christian) also tallied 21 points and grabbed an impressive 20 rebounds.   Junior Catherine Dunn (Aberdeen, N.J./St. John's Vianney) shot a career-best 85.7 from the field (6-of-7) for 12 points and added nine rebounds.  Seniors Erica Marcum (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) and Ebony Smith (Palmyra, Va./Fluvanna County) chipped in 10 points each for the Lancers.  Sophomore Ashley Mason (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) saw action for the first time this season, coming off the bench to add five points and a steal.  Saint Paul's Quisannah Noel led the Lady Tigers in scoring with 20 points, while India Elliot added nine. 

As a team, the Lancers shot 46.9 percent (38-81) from the floor, including a season-best 50.0 percent in the first half.  Longwood also dominated the boards with a 59-31 advantage.  The Lancers had a season-best 12 turnovers, while forcing 19 for the Lady Tigers.  Longwood also got 41 points from its bench this evening.

The Lancers (4-4) remain at home this weekend, facing Wingate Dec. 6 at 3 p.m. in Lancer Hall.
