Women's Basketball Runs Past Davis & Elkins 78-57

Orlando, Fla. – The Longwood University women’s basketball team scored the game’s first two baskets and never looked back as the Lancers defeated Davis & Elkins 78-57 this afternoon in the Disney Holiday Basketball Classic at the Wide World of Sport’s Milkhouse venue. The Lancers are now over .500 for the first time this season at 6-5, while the Senators fall to 3-5.

Longwood jumped out to an early 7-2 lead with sophomore Amber Mason (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) scoring back-to-back buckets in the first five minutes. Sophomore Jessica Wilkerson (Roanoke, Va./Northside) pushed the lead up to 16-7 after connected on a long three-pointer. Davis & Elkins closed within two at the 7:30 mark after scoring off of three Lancer turnovers. Abbey Freese (West Liberty, Ohio/West Liberty Salem) hit a three pointer and to push the lead back up tp six with less than five minutes left in the period. Marita Meldere (Rujiena, Lativa/Lynchburg Christian) gave Longwood its biggest lead of the half, hitting a jumper and connecting on a pair of free-throws with a minute to go, making the score 43-33 at the break.

In the second half, Amber Mason’s three point play opened the lead to 12 at 53-41. A made Davis & Elkins three-pointer and lay-up brought the Senators back to within seven, forcing a Longwood timeout. The teams traded baskets for much of the second half, but the made free throws by Meldere and Wilkerson, the Lancers finally pulled away.

Meldere got her second-straight game with more than 20 points and led all scorers with 24 points and 19 rebounds. Amber Mason chipped in 14 points and dished out a team-high five assists. Senior Ebony Smith (Palmyra, Va./Fluvanna County) added 12 points and seven rebounds, while senior Erica Marcum (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) came off the bench with seven points and three boards. As a team, Longwood shot 43.5 from the floor , including .448 percent from in the second half and dominated the boards 46-30. The Lancers also doubled on steals with a 12-6 advantage.

Following a holiday break, the Lancers return to action Jan. 1 against Lees-McRae at 4 p.m. in Lancer Hall.
