FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood University dropped an 86-76 men’s college basketball decision to visiting Shaw (N.C.) University Monday night in Lancer Hall. Senior transfer Cordell Maxwell/Detroit, Mich. scored a career-high 27 points in only his second game with Shaw to lead the Bears. Senior All-America candidate Charles Stephens/Danville (GW-Danville) led the Lancers with his game-high double-double of 31 points and 11 rebounds. Longwood, now 2-8 on the season, will play at Belmont Abbey College Thursday, Dec. 18, at 7 p.m. in North Carolina. Shaw improved to 2-5 on the year and will play at a tournament in Ocean City, Md. Dec. 27-28.
Shaw jumped ahead 11-1 during the first 2:36 of the game behind five quick points from Maxwell and had its largest lead of the first half at 18-7 with 14:37 left before halftime. Longwood, however, stormed back with a 17-5 run to lead 24-23 at 9:51 sparked by back-to-back three-point field goals off the bench from freshman Husein Pistoljevic/Hanford, Wash. (Richland). The Lancers continued with the momentum to lead 46-37 with just 2:40 remaining before the break on Pistoljevic’s third three-pointer of the half. The Bears closed the period fast though, including a three-point play from Maxwell, to pull within 46-44 at the intermission.
The second half remained close between the two teams as Longwood led 64-61 with 9:52 remaining on a floater in the lane from junior Ryan Marable/Chesterfield (Huguenot Academy). The game was tied at 66-66 with 8:00 to play on a pair of free throws from Lancer freshman Michael Jefferson/Chesterfield (Meadowbrook). Shaw then took control down the stretch, closing with a 20-10 run behind eight points from Maxwell as Longwood could not get any closer than 80-76 with 1:48 left on a field goal inside from Stephens. The Bears sealed the outcome with 61% (17-28) shooting from the field in the second half.
Stephens finished 10-22 from the field, including 2-5 three-pointers, and 9-11 at the free throw line while adding three assists to his 31 points and 11 rebounds for Longwood. Freshman Maurice Sumter/Alexandria (T.C. Williams) added 13 points, six rebounds, and two blocks while Jefferson and Pistoljevic each finished with 11 points. Marable had a game-high eight assists off the bench for the Lancers. Longwood shot 43% (29-68) from the field, including 27% (6-22) on three-pointers, and 80% (12-15) at the line.
Maxwell added five rebounds and four assists to his team-high 27 points for Shaw. The Bears also received double-figure scoring from senior Michael McLeod/New York, N.Y. with 15 points, adding seven rebounds and five assists; senior Anthony Greenup/Baton Rouge, La. with 14 points, eight rebounds, and four blocks; and freshman Daryl Jacobs/Buffalo, N.Y. with 10 points and three blocks. Shaw shot 57% (36-63) from the field, including 44% (4-9) on three-pointers, and 71% (10-14) at the line.
