FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took a 3-1 men's collegiate soccer triumph past visiting Pfeiffer University Saturday night at Lancer Field. The Lancers took control of the match early and led 2-0 at the intermission en route to improving their record to 4-8. The Falcons dropped to 5-5-1. Longwood will not play again until Oct. 16 at Lees-McRae.
Against Pfeiffer, junior Stuart Bertsch/Norfolk (Maury) scored the opening goal at 4:54 of the first half for Longwood on a penalty-kick. Senior Shawn Spilman/Cincinnati, Ohio (Oak Hills) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal at 23:28, assisted by classmate Mark Connelly/Warrenton (Fauquier) and the Lancers had the 2-0 lead at halftime. Freshman James Agorsor/Gambrills, Md. (South River) pushed the advantage to 3-0 at 51:15 with an unassisted goal. Pfeiffer avoided the shutout with a late unassisted goal from Will Jones at 82:23.
Longwood took a 13-7 advantage in shots against Pfeiffer, though the Falcons did have a 9-6 edge in corner-kicks. Freshman keeper Justin Brock/Palo Alto, Calif. (Palo Alto) played the entire 90:00 in front of the net for the Lancers with four saves. The Falcons received eight saves from keeper Nick Drye.
