West Long Branch, N.J. -- The Longwood University field hockey team was held scoreless this afternoon as Division I Rider blanked the Lancers 4-0 at Campus Field. Longwood falls to 3-5 for the season and Rider improves to 4-2.
The Lancers held their own in the first half with strong defensive efforts coming from senior Erin Sixsmith (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) and sophomores Marina Sizow (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) and Shannon Ratte (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville). However, Rider picked up the pace in the second period and scored three goals for the victory.
Junior All-American Lorrie Watts (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford), who was back on the field after sitting out seven games due to an injury, and sophomore Julie Price (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) got of one shot each for the Lancers. Junior keeper Julie Patterson (Esmont, Va./Monticello) managed to rack up 23 saves for Longwood, while Rider’s Krysta Bearish had two.
The Lancers head over to West Long Branch, N.J. to take on Monmouth tomorrow at 2 p.m. on Monmouth Field.
