Men’s Soccer Slips By Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, Va.  -- Senior forward Mark Connelly (Warrenton, Va./Fauquier) booted in the game-winning goal at the 9:40 mark of the second overtime period to put Longwood University on top of Mary Washington College 2-1 this afternoon at the Battleground Athletic Complex.  With the victory, the Lancers improve to 3-6 on the season while the Eagles drop to 4-2.

Connelly put Longwood on the board first scoring 10 minutes into the first half.  Mary Washington’s Caleb Billmeier answered at the 42:04 mark, heading the ball into the net off of an assist from Ryan Kish.  The Lancers took six shots in the second half but couldn’t convert, sending the game into overtime.

In the first extra period, neither team found net, but Connelly gave Longwood the victory in the second. 

For the game, the Lancers outshot the Eagles 15-8, including 4-0 in the overtime periods.  Oliver Denal (Denmark/Lyngby Handelsskolen) led Longwood with four shots, followed by Connelly and Adonis Stowers (Hampton, Va./Phoebus) with three and Henrik Agerskov (Hampton, Va./Phoebus) with one.  Lancer goalkeeper Justin Brock  (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) played all 101:30 minutes in net and racked up four saves. 

After six-straight away matches, Longwood returns home Tuesday to face Gardner-Webb at 7 p.m. on Lancer Field.
