BOX SCORE

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior Stuart Bertsch’s (Norfolk, Va./Maury) header with three minutes left lifted the Longwood University men’s soccer team over Virginia Military Institute (VMI) Friday afternoon at Patchin Field.  The 2-1 victory marks the Lancers’ first win over a Division I opponent this season.

Longwood got on the board 13 minutes into the first half as sophomore Matt Dishner (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Jefferson Forest [Va.]) drilled a 30-yard shot into the back of the net.  VMI evened things up at the 42:23 mark when freshman forward Alec Winsper scored his first collegiate goal.

“We played well and worked the ball well,” stated coach Dave Barrueta after the victory.  “We are still making some mistakes, but we are getting there.”

The match proved to be a physical affair, as Keydet Ross Davis received a red card in the first half, while Lancer James Agorsor  (Gambrillis, Md./South River) was handed one in the second.  The Lancers were charged with 13 fouls, while the Keydets had 16.  Longwood outshot VMI 11-9 and also took a 7-1 advantage on cornerkicks.  Lancer goalkeeper Bryan Sanford (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) recorded five saves, while giving up only one goal.

The win improves Longwood to 2-1 overall and the Keydets remain winless at 0-3.  The Lancers are back on the road Sunday facing UNC Pembroke 7:00 p.m. at the Irwin Belk Soccer Complex.
