BOXSCORE
FARMVILLE, Va. -- The Longwood University men’s soccer team fought through wet field conditions, but couldn’t hold off Elon, as the Lancers fell to the Phoenix tonight 1-0 at Lancer Field. The game was the first NCAA Division I match-up for the Lancers this season.
Both teams came out in full force in the first half. Longwood missed three scoring opportunities during the first 45 minutes of action, as shots by James Agorsor (Gambrillis, Md./South River), Henrik Agerskov (Denmark/Rungsted Gymnasium) and Matt Dishner (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Jefferson Forest {Va.}) came up short. The teams were scoreless at the break.
In the second half, Elon’s Matt Bengston gave Elon the 1-0 lead at the 60:11 mark, booting the ball into the back right corner of the net from 25 yards out. Longwood had several chances to convert late in the second half but Elon’s defense proved to be too much. The Phoenix outshot the Lancers 11-9, including five shots on goal to Longwood’s three. The Lancers’ Bryan Sanford (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) allowed one goal, but managed to collect four saves.
Longwood drops to 1-2 on the season, while Elon improves to 1-1. The Lancers are on the road Friday battling Virginia Military Institute (VMI) at 4 pm on Patchin Field.
