GREENEVILLE, Tenn. -- The Longwood men’s soccer team began the 2003 campaign with a win over Carson-Newman, 2-1, giving the Lancer’s their first win under head coach Dave Barrueta.
“We played well enough to win, but could have put in a better effort,” stated Barrueta. “Overall it was a good first win for us.”
Longwood appeared on the board as James Agorsor (Gambrillis, Md./South River) booted one in the goal on an assist from Tony Soules (Springfield, Va./West Springfield). Carson-Newman came back to tie the game at 1-1 late in the second-half, but the effort wasn’t enough as Longwood’s Stuart Bertsch (Norfolk, Va./Maury) headed the ball into the net off of a cornerkick from Shawn Spilman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills).
With the victory, Longwood moves to 1-0, while Carson-Newman falls to 0-1. Up next, The Lancers will face Tusculum Sunday at 3:00.
