Men’s Soccer Stings Lynchburg 4-1

FARMVILLE, Va.  -- The Longwood University men’s soccer team dominated during its last home game of the season, knocking down visiting Lynchburg College 4-1 at Lancer Field.  The Senior Night victory gives the Lancers a record of 6-10, while the Hornets drop to 7-11.

Six minutes into the first half, Hornet Drew Jamison shot the ball from 20 yards out into the back of the net on assists from Casey Zambor and Brandon Flowers.  Sophomore midfielder Tony Soules (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) tied the game at 1-1 at the 11:56 mark when senior forward Mark Connelly (Warrenton, Va./Fauquier) shot him a break-away pass from the far right side.  Twenty minutes later, sophomore midfielder Dmitri Isakovski (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk) gave Longwood the lead going into the break, scoring off a cross from senior midfielder Shawn Spilman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills). Spilman’s assists moved him into third place on the Lancers’ individual career assists list with 20. 

In the second half, Isakovski connected for his second goal of the evening off a rebound from a missed shot attempt at the 55:43 mark.  Longwood’s final goal came three minutes later when sophomore defender Matt Simmons (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) put one in a off a rebounded shot. 

Longwood dominated Lynchburg in shots 21-4 and corner kicks 4-0.  Lancer keeper sophomore Bryan Sanford (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) had one save while the Hornets split time in net between Brandon Schneider (74 min., 5 saves, 4 GA) and Ben LaFevre (16 min., 0 saves, 0 GA).  Junior midfielder Stuart Bertsch (Norfolk, Va./Maury) led the Lancers with four shots, followed by Connelly, Spilman and freshman defender Chris Miller (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) with three and Isakovski and Soules with two each. 

The Lancers will conclude the season on Nov. 8, when they face Division I Mercer in Macon, Ga. at 7 p.m..
