FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a disappointing 3-2 season-ending decision in women’s collegiate soccer to NCAA Division III’s 13th-ranked Virginia Wesleyan College Wednesday night at Lancer Field. The Division II Lancers complete their 2003 season with a final record of 9-7-1, while the nationally-ranked Marlins improved to 17-1-1.
Longwood and #13 Virginia Wesleyan battled to a scoreless first half before Lancer freshman Tiffany Crane/Virginia Beach (Kellam) tallied a goal at 59:12, assisted by sophomore Melissa Cary/Bristow (Brentsville) for a 1-0 lead. The Marlins came right back as Katie Barg scored unassisted just 1:29 later to tie the closely-played match at 1-1 (60:41). Longwood responded just minutes later when senior Phoebe Munson/Virginia Beach (Tallwood) notched her school-record 46th career goal, unassisted at 65:22, for a 2-1 advantage. Wesleyan again rallied to tie the contest at 2-2 with another goal from Barg at 73:07, assisted by Keren Larkin. The Marlins added the game-winning goal just 1:53 later as Larkin tallied her own unassisted goal at 75:00, completing a 15:48 flurry during which all five goals were scored.
Longwood took a narrow 5-4 advantage in shots against the Marlins, though each team had five corner-kick chances. Longwood junior keeper Lindsay Naill/Alexandria (Bishop Ireton) played the first half in front of the net with one save, while freshman Heather Storrie/Spring Grove, Pa. (Spring Grove) played the second half, allowing the three goals with no saves. Virginia Wesleyan’s Laura Wiederwax played the entire match in goal with three saves.
This is the first time since the Longwood program began in 1994 (5-6-0) that Lancers have not reached at least 10 wins in a season.
