FARMVILLE, Va. -- The Longwood University men’s soccer was stopped on its home field tonight by Division I High Point 2-1. Following the loss, the Lancers fall to 5-9 while the Panthers improve to 4-9-1.
High Point first got on the board at the 6:38 mark of the opening period on a Matt Wood goal off a cross from Kirk Rudder. Wood put the Panthers up 2-0 at the 26:45 mark off assists from Alex Thompson and Chris Archer. Longwood’s junior midfielder Stuart Bertsch (Norfolk, Va./Maury) made it 2-1 going onto the half, putting the ball in the back of the net of a pass from freshman forward James Agorsor (Gambrills, Md./South River).
Both teams battled it out in the second stanza, with Longwood tallying seven shots to High Points five, but failed to convert. Bertsch led the Lancers with five shots, followed by freshman midfielder Henrik Agerskov (Denmark/Rungsted Gymnasium) and freshman defender Tim Mansour (Denmark/Virum Gymnasium) with two each.
Freshman goalkeeper Justin Brock (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) tallied four saves in the loss, while High Point’s Matt Long was credited with four stops as well.
Up next, the Lancers travel to Division I North Carolina-Asheville Oct. 23 at 4 p.m..
