BANNER ELK, N.C. -- Longwood University took a 1-0 women’s collegiate soccer victory at Lees-McRae College Thursday in North Carolina. The Lancers improved their record to 8-4-1, while the Bobcats dropped to 7-5-2.
At Lees-McRae, senior Phoebe Munson/Virginia Beach (Tallwood) tallied the lone goal of the match in the 19th minute of the first half, unassisted, and it proved the difference in the game. Munson’s game-winner was her fifth goal of the season, and more significantly, was her 44th career goal to tie the school-record (Erin Hirschi, 44, 1997-00).
Longwood took a 14-6 advantage in shots against Lees-McRae, and a 5-2 edge in corner-kick opportunities. Freshman keeper Heather Storrie/Spring Grove, Pa. (Spring Grove) played the entire match in front of the net for the Lancers with four saves to preserve her first collegiate shutout -- the team’s eighth of the season. Bobcat keeper Anita Hekman played the entire match with nine saves for the hosts.
Longwood will play again this Saturday, Oct. 18, hosting NCAA Division I High Point University on Lancer Field beginning at 5 p.m. in Farmville -- admission is free.
