The All New Eagle 1490, WPAK-AM To Broadcast Longwood Basketball

October 15, 2003

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University Director of Athletics Rick Mazzuto has announced an agreement for Lancer men’s and women’s basketball games to be broadcast this season on local radio station The All New Eagle 1490, WPAK-AM. The broadcasts will include all 27 men’s contests during the upcoming year, along with 10 women’s contests. All broadcasts are expected to be available worldwide via the Internet as well at longwoodlancers.com.

“Longwood is delighted to come to agreement with WPAK,” said Mazzuto. “These broadcasts will allow us to bring Lancer basketball to our fans locally and across the nation.”

WPAK, a 24-hour 1,000 watt station, is under new ownership and management, having recently been acquired by MJ Communications LLC this past April. New owner and General Manager Mark Niemand has 15 years of previous radio experience in Virginia and Georgia, including most-recently in the Richmond area with Hoffman Communications, Inc. as Operations Manager for WZEZ-FM and WGGM-AM. Niemand has also developed radio broadcasts with Kennesaw State University as well as being associated with broadcast affiliates of the University of Tennessee, Georgia Tech, and the University of Richmond.

“We’re thrilled to have the broadcast rights for Longwood University Athletics,” explained Niemand. “From the time I came to Farmville, one of my top priorities was to develop a strong relationship with Longwood. The transition into Division I makes this one of the most exciting broadcast situations I’ve ever been associated with -- WPAK is looking forward to a long relationship with the Lancers.”

The 10 women’s game broadcasts include the following contests: Lenoir-Rhyne (Nov. 18, 6:50 p.m.), Saint Paul’s (Dec. 3, 3:50 p.m.), Wingate (Dec. 6, 2:50 p.m.), Lees-McRae (Jan. 1, 3:50 p.m.), Queens (Jan. 5, 6:50 p.m.), Francis Marion (Jan. 12, 4:50 p.m.), Apprentice School (Feb. 2, 6:50 p.m.), Radford (Feb. 10, 3:50 p.m.), Virginia Union (Feb. 12, 6:50 p.m.), and Southern Virginia (Feb. 25, 6:50 p.m.).

Additionally, for anyone without access to local radio or a computer for the Internet broadcasts, all Longwood University basketball broadcasts will be available over the telephone line via TEAMLINE (1.800.846.4700, ext. 2390) at costs as low as 10-cents per minute.
