Shirley Duncan (Women’s Basketball Coach 1983-2005) is the winningest coach in Longwood women's basketball history, leading the program to a 355-263 record and four NCAA Division II Tournament appearances across 23 seasons. She strung together 12 consecutive winning seasons from 1993-94 to 2004-05, including the 2002-03 campaign in which the Lancers won the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Association (CVAC) Tournament and were ranked as high as No. 19 in the Division II National Coaches Poll.
Duncan was a two-time WBCA/Russell Athletic Regional Coach of the Year, a two-time CVAC Coach of the Year and a three-time VaSID Division II-III State Coach of the Year. During her tenure, Longwood finished above .500 in 15 of her 23 seasons, including five 20-win seasons. Duncan mentored two first team All-Americans in Carmille Barnette (1990) and Caren Forbes (1987) along with seven other fourth team or honorable mention All-America honorees.
Longwood won a pair of NCAA Tournament games under Duncan, taking down Presbyterian in the 1995 South Atlantic Regional first round and then matching that feat eight years later with a first-round win over West Liberty State in the 2003 East Regional.
